Tennessee General Assembly passed legislation Tuesday that would suspend driving privileges for juveniles who make mass violence threats on school property or at a school-related activity. House Bill 1698, sponsored by State Rep. Robert Stevens, R-Smyrna, adds loss of driving privileges or the ability to obtain a driver’s license to those adjudicated juveniles’ dispositions. If the juvenile already has their driver’s license, they would lose it for one year. If the juvenile does not have their license, they lose the ability to obtain a driver’s license for one year. The bill is headed to Governor Bill Lee’s desk for his signature.
The Maury County Sheriff’s Department recently launched its first-ever cold case unit dedicated to bringing justice to victims of unsolved investigations. Sheriff Bucky Rowland said the new squad brought a wealth of knowledge and was strategically made up of retired law enforcement, former forensic examiners, and criminal justice majors.
Two homes were searched in Mt. Juliet on Wednesday in part of an investigation involving methamphetamine. Police said search warrants were executed at a home on SE Springdale Drive and a home on Belinda Parkway. No injuries were reported in the searches. Police add that their investigation remains ongoing.
Republican lawmakers in Tennessee on Wednesday advanced legislation making it illegal for adults to help minors get an abortion without parental consent. sparking objections from Democrats who counter that doing so could result in young victims needing approval from their parents who may have raped them to terminate the pregnancies. The GOP-controlled Senate signed off on the proposal 26-3. The bill is still advancing toward the floor of the House.
Authorities are trying to identify a person of interest amid an investigation into the thefts of multiple clothing recycle bins from various Murfreesboro locations. The Murfreesboro Police Department said surveillance video shows someone in a white box truck pulling into a parking lot at one of the locations, loading one of the recycle bins into the car, and driving off. Officials say five bins worth $1,200 each were stolen around the city
