Tennessee is offering help to Florida ahead of Hurricane Ian. Governor Bill Lee has asked for 12-hundred members of the state National Guard to be deployed to support the Sunshine State who is bracing for landfall today. Other agencies across the state are also preparing to send help if needed in the recovery efforts after Ian has passed through.
A Dickson County judge is denying a request for a new trial for Joseph Daniels. He is the man convicted of killing his five-year-old son, “Baby Joe” Daniels. Defense attorneys filed the motion earlier this month, citing insufficient evidence in his conviction. District Judge David Wolfe denied the request yesterday afternoon, saying the allegations made by Daniels’ lawyers were dismissible or without merit.
Many Middle Tennessee residents are finding rising prices scary heading into the Halloween season. Inflation is making even jack-o-lanterns costlier this year. Michael Boatman with Flying Ghost Pumpkin Patch says prices for pumpkins are up around 20 percent. He says expanded budgets for fuel and fertilizer have forced the farm to sell larger carving pumpkins for around eight dollars each.
United Ministries Food Bank of Robertson County has recently added hygiene and feminine products to the items it makes available to community members in need. United Ministries director Sherry Martell says as of Sept. 15 they provide items like laundry detergent, soap, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, trash bags, wipes and feminine products. The items can be picked up at the food bank on S. Main St. in Springfield from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
The Discover White House Expo and Safety Day presented by The Farmers Bank is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Hall Complex on College Street. There will be a variety of businesses and organizations with vendor booths and a puppet show and face painting for the kids. The White House Police Department and Fire Department will be hosting Safety Day.
