The snow is not all fun and games. All week, doctors have been treating injuries suffered during sledding incidents. Most of the injuries are head injuries, and now with the dangers of potential ice coming to the Middle Tennessee area, more injuries could happen especially on the roadway.
Crews will be out in full force clearing the interstates of ice and snow if it falls today. However, TDOT said they don’t plan to change what they already have in place for the winter mix. TDOT said the brine their trucks applied to the interstates earlier in the week would be enough to do the job. Their main priority is to clear any snow and ice, so it doesn’t freeze or build up. Crews will also be salting during and after the weather hits. However, potholes are a possibility. TDOT said they will focus on that after this weather event.
Blood Assurance is recommending hospitals around the region to hold off on elective surgeries until at least next week due to a lack of blood inventory. The blood center has less than a half-day supply of most blood types on its shelves, including O-negative and O-positive, the two types most used for transfusions. Potential donors should monitor www.bloodassurance.org and the blood bank’s social media channels for updates on closures and delays. Many donation centers normally closed on weekends, will be open this Saturday and Sunday to collect additional units.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is now accepting applications for grants from the state’s Tire Environmental Act Program. The grants are for projects that create or expand beneficial uses for waste tires, including tire recycling and processing, using materials derived from tires, using tires for alternative fuels, or promoting innovation in infrastructure. The deadline for submission of grant applications is April 15. There are no restrictions on eligible entity types. All organizations are eligible to apply for the funding.
