Local News

A homeowner is dead following an early Monday morning house fire in Montgomery County.  The blaze broke out just before 2 a.m. on Highway 48/13 in the Cunningham area.  The homeowner did not survive the blaze. Their identity has not yet been released.

Students of The Covenant School have been attending classes inside the Brentwood Hills Church of Christ for three weeks after six people were killed by an active shooter. The Covenant School initially planned to return to its Green Hills campus in January 2024. Students will now return in April 2024. The school cited several factors that led up to the decision but didn’t cite any specifics.

The 2024 presidential primary ballot has been finalized in Tennessee, according to Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett.  The Tennessee primary will be on March 5, as part of Super Tuesday. Fifteen other states will hold their presidential primaries on that day as well. Donald Trump and 7 other Republicans are vying for the Republican nomination.  Joe Biden is the only democratic candidate.

The Springfield Fire Department’s station house 2 on Bradley Drive sustained major damage from the ferocious winds accompanying Saturday;’  tornados.  The winds wiped out warehouses and multiple businesses in the Kroger shopping center. It not only peeled the side of the Kroger supermarket but also wrecked multiple cars in the Kroger parking lot. A 2×4 launched like a spear into the side of a blue Hyundai.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reports the death of a woman found inside a home that burned down wasn’t caused by the fire but by a gunshot wound.  After the December 3 fire, crews discovered the body of 66-year-old Gale Meister inside. Investigators say  57-year-old Frank Lackey of Nashville had been living at the home and was the prime suspect in the killing.  Before police could question he died by suicide by putting a gun to his head.
