A Franklin couple is recovering from minor injuries following a fire over the weekend. Officials say the man and woman were forced to jump from an upstairs window after the blaze broke out around 1:00 o’clock Saturday morning. Franklin Fire Investigator Brian Daugherty says it appears that flames started on the home’s covered back porch after a pile of oily rags spontaneously combusted. Fire officials say smoke detectors, sleeping with the bedroom door closed, and having an operating window were all factors that allowed the residents to escape with their lives.
The 34th annual Kiwanis Rodeo is May 18, 19 and 20 at the Montgomery County 4H Arena in Clarksville. There will be a petting zoo, pony riding and various activities for children and numerous food options. All proceeds from the Kiwanis Rodeo go to fund the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville’s programs for children. The Rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. each night. Tickets are available at the gate or online. The city swimming pool in Portland will not open this year due to needed repairs. The pool is 50 years old and several leaks have been detected, which makes it a safety issue. The cost of renovating the pool could be from $500,000 to $750,000. But the cost of building a new pool would be much higher..
A library book checked out in New Jersey 44 years ago has finally been returned. “Back to Basics” was checked out of the Hopewell Branch of the Mercer Library on July 25th, 1979, making it overdue by around 16-thousand days. A maintenance worker found it recently in a box of donated books. No word on where the book has been or who returned it. Late fees are ten-cents a day but the library has capped those at just six-bucks..
