The National Weather Service is issuing a Red Flag Warning for Middle Tennessee today. Officials say dry conditions, sustained winds, and low humidity mean any accidental fires can spread quickly. Smokers are urged to make sure cigarettes are completely out before disposing of them and anyone using outdoor equipment that causes sparks or flames is asked to use extreme caution. The warning runs from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Governor Bill Lee is trying to bring some gun reform to Tennessee. Lee yesterday released his proposed “Temporary Mental Health Order of Protection.” It suggests giving someone 48 hours to surrender all their guns and ammunition if they are issued an order of protection. He has asked for Tennessee’s lawmakers to put partisanship aside for his proposal, which they will need to decide on quickly as the legislative session is soon ending. Republican Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally, a vocal supporter of the second amendment, released a statement voicing his approval of Lee’s proposal.
A bill to raise teacher pay is making its way through Tennessee’s legislature. The House and Senate in Nashville have passed a bill which looks to guarantee teachers make at least 50-thousand dollars a year by the 2026-2027 school year. It would also mean pay must increase year-by-year between now and then. Similar bills have been passed across the country in recent months in efforts to resolve a nationwide teacher shortage.
