For the second consecutive year the Stokes Brown Public Library, will be hosting the 2023 Downtown Springfield Literacy & STEM Walk next month. The event will take place on Saturday, May 6 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m., beginning at the library. This year’s walk will feature the book “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” by Laura Numeroff.
The Art League of Cheatham County to announces their fourth annual juried art show featuring 27 competing artists with over 57 pieces of original works including paintings, mixed media, sculptures, photography. This is the first year the art league has opened this competition to member artists who do not live in Cheatham County. There will be three adult divisions: 2D, 3D, and Photography offering a first, second and third place winners in each division with an overall adult division Best of Show of $1,000.
Time is running out for Tennessee’s lawmakers to take action on gun violence during the current legislative session. The last day of the session appears to be coming in the next week or so and the Democrats’ only version of a so-called “red flag” bill was voted down in a House committee yesterday. It comes after Governor Bill Lee called on lawmakers to draft an “order of protection” before the session ends. Republicans say conversations are ongoing but Democrats are concerned their colleagues across the aisle may be trying to run the clock out and not take decisive action. The governor’s call came after the recent school shooting in Nashville which claimed six victims’ lives, including three children.
A member of the Tennessee National Guard is being accused of trying to become a hitman. A criminal complaint says Josiah Ernesto Garcia made an inquiry to a website called “Rent-A-Hitman” earlier this year. He later met with an undercover FBI agent in Nashville who gave him information about a fake target. Garcia was later arrested when he asked if he needed to take a photo of the dead body to prove the job was done.
