The State of Tennessee is increasing funding for school security after the shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville last week. Governor Bill Lee says the state will use 140-million dollars to hire School Resource Officers and highly-trained guards at campuses. Lee added that the state will establish a grant fund to allow schools to make “significant physical security upgrades,” and that money will also toward mental healthcare. The governor’s announcement comes as students walked out of schools in Nashville to protest for stricter gun laws after the shooting.
Three Democratic state lawmakers in the Tennessee House of Representatives are being stripped of their committee assignments and face expulsion after taking part in gun protests at the capitol. The GOP-controlled house voted to remove representatives Justin Jones of Nashville, Justin Pearson, and Gloria Johnson from their committees Monday. The three had joined a fiery protest calling for reforms after the Covenant School tragedy. Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton called their actions unacceptable and a violation of the rules of decorum. Resolutions have been put forward to remove the three from the legislature altogether.
Gas prices across the state moved more expensive again last week, rising a total of eight cents, on average. The Tennessee Gas Price average is now $3.21 which is 16 cents more expensive than one month ago but 76 cents less than one year ago.
