A Sumner County teen has died following a Friday accident related to the severe weather that swept through Middle Tennessee. Officials with Liberty Creek High School say Aleya [[ ah-LEE-uh ]] Brooks was taken off life support over the weekend. She was struck by a falling tree as she was helping her family clean up storm debris, according to authorities. Aleya’s [[ ah-LEE-uh’s ]] parents say they have decided to make her an organ donor because they know she would have wanted to make a positive impact on the world, even in her passing.
Officials in Clarksville say some families are out of their homes after damage caused by Friday’s storms sparked a fire at an apartment building. Fire investigators say power had just been restored when a short caused by damaged electrical lines running to the building started the blaze. Firefighter were able to quickly get the flames under control. The Red Cross is assisting the tenants.
Springfield native Michael Crawley is working to bring Robertson County a drive-in movie theater. In 2020, Crawley purchased several pieces of property in Coopertown on Tom Austin Highway, initially to just hold as an investment. Once he realized that the location would be perfect for a drive-in, he decided to move ahead with the project. If all goes according to plan, Crawley hopes to officially open the drive-in by late 2023.
Daylight saving time begins next weekend and sleep experts are advocating to get rid of clock changes once and for all in favor of permanent standard time. Jennifer Martin, a licensed clinical psychologist and president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine says mounting evidence shows the dangers of seasonal time changes, which have been linked to increased medical errors, motor vehicle accidents, increased hospital admissions and other problems. Martin says restoring permanent, year-round standard time is the best option for our health and well-being.
The United Way of Greater Nashville is offering Robertson County residents the 19th annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax prep program. Eligible taxpayers can come in and receive help from volunteers to prepare their taxes for them for free, while a site coordinator will file their tax returns for them. Everything is setup and ready to go at the Robertson County Board of Education Building.
