New laws are now in effect in Tennessee for the new year.  Yesterday saw the start of 20 new laws in the Volunteer State including sales tax exemptions for farmers, extra money to help foster children and mandatory human trafficking training for some state departments.  Lawmakers will meet in Nashville for the next legislative session on January 10th.

Many businesses and offices remain closed today in observance of the New Year’s holiday.  U.S. post offices are closed and mail delivery is postponed for businesses and homes.  Nearly all city and county government offices are also shut down.  United Parcel Service officials say most of their workers have the day off, although, a limited number of drop off locations are operating.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting in Cheatham County.  The sheriff’s office says the incident happened near the intersection of Old Clarksville Road and Randy Road just before 9:30 last night.  Authorities say the deputy involved is ok, but details on any other individuals have not yet been released.  A section of Old Clarksville road was shut down during the investigation.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is now accepting public comments on their plan to handle Chronic Wasting Disease in the deer population.  The five-year-long initiative is aimed at preventing the spread of the illness and sharing relevant information with the public and hunters.  More than six-hundred deer out of 16-thousand tested positive for CWD during the 2021-2022 fiscal year.  Chronic Wasting Disease is a fatal nervous system infection in deer.  The illness is not known to impact humans, but, the CDC recommends avoiding consumption of meat from animals that are carrying it.

The spotlight is on Pasadena, California today, with the 134th annual Rose Parade and 109th Rose Bowl Game.  Called “The Granddaddy of Them All,” college football’s oldest bowl game matches Penn State and Utah.  The Rose Parade begins at 10 a.m. Local time on Channel 2 and the Rose Bowl kicks off at 4 p.m.
