Several school districts across Middle Tennessee are closing in the aftermath of COVID-19 outbreaks among their students and staff.  At least eight school districts have announced they’re closing this week or next.  This past month, almost 42-thousand-600 Tennessee children tested positive for the virus.  One parent says if the state wants to keep children in schools, it needs to try harder to make sure they’re learning in safe buildings.

Meanwhile, Health officials across the state are concerned about a surge in COVID-19 cases from the holiday weekend.  Football games and barbecues will have communities in a festive mood and ready to socialize.  That has doctors warning that hospitals are filling up with COVID patients so people might want to rethink their weekend plans and limit their exposure to crowds.

Police agencies across Tennessee say officers will be more visible this holiday.  Cops are stepping up patrols for the Labor Day weekend.  The Booze It and Lose It campaign is underway and focuses on reducing the number of drivers under the influence.  The Booze It and Lose It program works with the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.  In 2019, 451 people were killed in Labor Day crashes nationwide with 38-percent involving drunk drivers.

Tennessee’s former top vaccine official — Dr. Michele Fiscus — has gone to court over what she calls “stigmatizing and derogatory” statements that were published in the media after her dismissal.  Fiscus alleges State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey and Chief Medical Officer Tom Jones denied her request for a hearing to clear her name.  Dr. Fiscus was fired July 12th over what she contends was pressure from Republican lawmakers who were upset with her comments on vaccination for juveniles.  .
