Some Tennessee school districts are voicing concerns about a new Tennessee law that bans books that contain any nudity or descriptions of sex, no matter how brief or the context. The law goes into effect in just a few weeks and school libraries are scrambling to comply. The old state law judged books by the entirety of the book, but this new law does not. Williamson County school board member, Eric Welch, says this new law is going to have a negative impact on education because it forces schools to remove books by Shakespeare, Hemingway, and Steinbeck off school library shelves, including the book “Roots” by Alex Haley.

Operation Stand Down Tennessee (OSDTN) opened its new transitional housing facility for homeless veterans. Since 1998, OSDTN has been operating out of seven houses. With the new building, all 42 homeless veterans will be under one roof. The group is made to accommodate 35 men and 7 women, serving as the state’s only housing program for female veterans. Each resident will be given a private bedroom with a twin bed, storage, a mini fridge, a desk, and an attached bathroom. The facility is separated into four wings with communal kitchens, laundry rooms, common areas, and offices.

At their monthly meeting last night, the Wilson County Commission talked about raising the county’s wheel tax by $50 to help increase pay for the county’s employees. If passed, the wheel tax would increase from $25 to $75, effective Jan. 1st. Budget Director Aaron Maynard told the commission’s budget committee that increasing the wheel tax would raise around $6 million.
