A senior citizen is still alive thanks to an off-duty Franklin firefighter who happened to be attending a Marshall County high school graduation ceremony last month. Cornersville High School’s graduation ceremony was well underway on May 16 when a man in the back of the room suddenly collapsed on the hard gym floor. Jayce Pickle, a firefighter and advanced emergency medical technician with the Franklin Fire Department, senior citizen was in full cardiac arrest. Pickle who was in the crowd to see his two nieces graduate, rushed to the man and started CPR. The senior citizen was revived and was rushed to a waiting ambulance, but before the graduation continued, the crowd cheered to thank all of the first responders.

Tennessee Fire Marshal’s Office’s grant-funded program, ‘Get Alarmed,’ at least 500 families are alive today. Get Alarmed launched in 2012 when Tennessee’s fire fatality rate was one of the highest in the nation. The program has played a key role in bringing that number down, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The State Fire Marshal’s Office distributes the smoke detectors to local fire departments and volunteer groups who then install the smoke detectors for free. More than 300,000 smoke detectors have been distributed through Get Alarmed, and more than 265,000 have been installed, according to the SFMO.

A proposal to license a private marina on a public lake in Gallatin would be big enough for up to 400 boats and a restaurant on Old Hickory Lake. The Army Corps of Engineers has the final say, and some have concerns about how the marina would impact safety and the environment. Some who object say they fear the new marina, restaurant, and dry boat storage facility would bring in up to 400 boats to the area, and he fears it will hurt the environment. However, other boaters say they’d like to see a new marina because other marinas in the area have waitlists.
