Sumner County first responders teamed up Wednesday to track down a man who drowned in Hendersonville. The Hendersonville Police Department said it responded to a possible drowning at the Saundersville Boat Ramp on Caudill Drive. Members of the Hendersonville Fire Department, the Sumner County Emergency Management Agency, Sumner County EMS, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) worked with officers to find the body of 76-year-old Mervin Johnson Jr, of Goodlettsville, who had drowned.
A stolen truck and drug paraphernalia were recovered and two women were arrested, thanks to license plate recognition cameras (LPR) in Cheatham County. Kingston Springs has an LPR camera at every major entrance into the city. According to city officials, the system has read over one million license plates so far this year.
Several county school districts closed last Wednesday due to severe weather, but Robertson County Schools remained open. Director of Schools Dr. Danny Weeks said that at any given time, they have nearly 100 buses to manage between 22 school campuses. He said it was difficult to manage given the severe weather, rapid changes in school bus locations, and an increase in radio traffic. The district closed on Thursday, May 9, and then had a delayed opening on Friday, May 10. That morning, Weeks said a Robertson County school bus carrying an estimated dozen kids got stuck in floodwaters. Weeks told News 2 that when deciding on a delayed opening or school closure, the school district relies on information from the local emergency management agency, the National Weather Service, and other county school directors.
Prayers and support for Asher Sullivan continue rolling in as the young man fights for his life. The 10-year-old has been hospitalized for a week after he was swept into a storm drain following the May 8 severe storms. In honor of Asher, some local softball and baseball players have been donning helmets with a gold star sticker and the letter ‘A’ inside. If you’d like to order the honorary Asher stickers, visit the JM Embroidery Facebook page. The owner says the best way to do that is by commenting on how many you’d like under the post about it. She said the business will acknowledge your request by liking your comment and reply when they’re ready to pick up at her storefront.
