A Gallatin pavement failure left some drivers questioning ongoing projects in the area. A motorist was driving down South Water Avenue on Saturday in their new Volkswagen Beatle when their vehicle hit a hole in the roadway along East Smith Street. The gaping hole is now covered with a temporary patch surrounded by cones. Just alongside the patch is a man-sized hole where repairs are underway. The assistant city engineer with Capital Improvements said Underneath the pavement was a storm pipe; the pavement above was originally patched over with a cold patch. The representative said it “settled more than anticipated and caused a pavement failure.”

A student at Portland East Middle School was hit by a car during dismissal Monday afternoon. The Portland Police Department, Portland Fire Department, and Sumner County EMS immediately responded to the school and assisted the student, who was conscious, speaking, and mobile while being loaded into an ambulance, according to officials. The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how the crash happened.

The Wilson County Director of Schools told board members at Monday’s meeting that he will not allow teachers to be armed. Director of Schools Jeff Luttrell explained his position to board members and the public during his monthly report to the board. The bill would allow teachers to carry concealed weapons in schools with permission of the director of school, the school’s principal, and the chief law officer of the county. The teachers would be required to undergo yearly background checks, psychological evaluations, and 40 hours of training to carry a concealed handgun.

What will likely be classified as a weak tornado touched down in Lebanon in Wilson County on Monday afternoon? The tornado warning was issued at 2:55 p.m. and at 2:57 p.m. the National Weather Service reported seeing debris on the radar. By 3:04 p.m., the rotation had weakened and it was evident the tornado was no longer on the ground. The tornado warning was canceled at 3:10 p.m.
