Tennesseans have some relief in the pocket book ahead as several sales tax holidays kick into gear.  From July 29th through the 31st a sales tax holiday applies for school supplies including clothing items and computers.  From August 1st to the 31st the tax exemption covers food.  Thirdly, from now through June 30th next year a tax break is available on purchases of gun safes and related safety equipment, not firearms themselves.

Clarksville Parks and Recreation is looking for volunteers to help clean up the Red River.  A gathering to remove trash from the water is scheduled on August fourth.  Registered participants will be provided with kayaks, life jackets, and cleaning supplies.  For more details and to register search city-of-clarksville-dot-com.

Stewart County Sheriff Frankie Gray is doing what he can to make sure his deputies can respond quickly to a threat inside a school.  Every officer in his department now has keys to the county’s public school buildings.  There are further response plans in place, with deputies being provided color-coded maps of the four schools in the county.  Gray says he wants parents to know his office is as prepared as possible to protect students.

White catfish are extremey rare, but two have been caught in the Tennessee River in the past few months.  TWRA biologist Mike Jolley said they were the first he’s ever seen in his 29 years of working on the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers.
