The Southern Baptist Convention is set to release names of ministers accused of sexual abuse. The Southern Baptist executive committee members will be releasing the list this Thursday. The move comes after an independent study was released this week showing the failure of the denomination’s leadership to pay attention to accusations of abuse. A statement from the SBC Executive Committee says the denomination “seeks to make clear that it views engaging with survivors as a critical step toward healing our Convention from the scourge of sexual abuse.”
Today, Dollar General store workers are set to demonstrate outside a shareholder’s meeting. The company workers and labor representatives with United For Respect are calling on the national discount retail chain to provide safer work conditions and better pay. The workers will march from Peay Park to City Hall in Goodlettsville this evening where a Dollar General shareholder meeting is scheduled to take place.
Flags at federal buildings and military posts in Middle Tennessee are to be flown at half-staff this morning after yesterday’s tragic shooting at a Texas elementary school. President Biden ordered the flags lowered yesterday evening after word of the shooting was made public. Reports show 19 children and two adult victims are dead, with police noting that the 18-year-old suspect has also died, likely killed by responding officers at Robb Elementary in Uvalde [[ you-VAHL-dee ]]. Biden addressed the nation about the shooting last night and made calls for new gun restrictions.
Fewer Tennessee students are going to college. A report from the state’s Higher Education Commission shows that nearly 62-percent of students were enrolled in college in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 the number dropped to 57-percent and it was 53-percent in 2021.
