The first sign of Spring. After breaking down the popular Winter Wonderland scenes, J. Travis Price Park has reopened to the public and is already drawing a crowd. Residents now have full access to the greenway trail, playground, basketball court, walking trails, soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, and batting cages. Springfield baseball and softball practice will begin on March 1, and the Springfield High School girls’ soccer team will begin using the public soccer fields and practicing around July 1. Later his month, the High School boys’ soccer team will be doing a 5K race on the greenway trail for a fundraiser. Plus, The Mid-Cumberland Community Action Agency is wrapping up a 2-day FREE food giveaway today from 9 am to 3 pm at Travis Price Park.
Tennessee is surpassing a grim milestone in the fight against COVID-19. The state reported yesterday it surpassed ten thousand COVID-19-related deaths. The Tennessee Department of Health reported over 130 additional deaths yesterday, bringing the state’s total number deaths from the virus to ten-thousand-and-33. The first coronavirus-related death in the state was reported on March 21st of last year. To date, Robertson County has logged 8,192 cases of COVId-19 since the pandemic began. 7,724 have recovered and 99 have died from COVID-19 in Robertson County.
Robertson County EMS Assistant Director Russell Gupton has resigned after 16 years of service to Robertson County. For the last nine years, Gupton has held the title of Assistant Director. Josh Rice has taken over Russell’s responsibilities as interim assistant director. The is no word yet on what Gupton will do next.
Governor Bill Lee is signing bills passed by lawmakers during their special session on education. One of the bills signed yesterday requires third graders to read on grade level before moving on to the fourth grade. Governor Lee said the state has “an obligation” to do the right thing for its kids and their education. Another bill will increase teacher pay.
