City leaders in Springfield have approved a $535,000 Local Parks and Recreation Fund Grant for upgrades at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The upgrades  will include a large playground area that will use a board-in-place rubber material for the playground base. It will have a tower, four slides, musical instrument panels, a large climbing mound with a rope, eight different styles of swings and a shade area with picnic tables. The expansion project is set to begin in January 2021 and is expected to be completed in July

The City of Springfield’s annual holiday lights tradition continues this year but will look different due to COVID-19. Viewing is limited to drive-through only at J. Travis Price Park from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m through December 23rd.   Winter Wonderland presented by the Springfield Parks & Recreation Department is a display of thousands of lights and more than a dozen holiday scenes.

We’re number one. But not in a good way. Data from the CDC shows Tennessee leads the nation for average new daily COVID-19 cases per capita over the last week.  CDC data shows a total increase of well over 61-thousand cases in Tennessee over the last several days.  That’s an increase of over 129 cases per 100-thousand people in that same weeks’ time.

Governor Bill Lee is announcing some good news in the fight against COVID-19.  Governor Lee posted to Twitter yesterday that the Moderna vaccine should start arriving at various county health departments on Monday.  Lee’s tweet indicated the vaccine would start shipping on Sunday.  More than 115-thousand doses are expected in the first shipment. 

The favorite holiday candy of the Volunteer State is peppermint bark.  A CandyStore.com survey says it’s also the favorite holiday candy of several other states, including Kentucky and Mississippi.  Candy canes came in second in Tennessee followed by Starburst in third.  The survey covered over 26-thousand customers and communication with manufacturers and distributors.
