It’s the end of an era. The last full-size Kmart store in the mainland U.S. is closing. The store in Bridgehampton, New York, on Long Island, is due to close Oct. 20. Kmart still has a small, convenience-size store in Miami as well as full-size stores in Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. CNN reports that the Bridgehampton location’s closing is a result of Kmart’s downfall during the “disastrous” merger of Sears and Kmart in 2005 and because of its competitor’s successes like Walmart and Target. At the time of the 2005 merger, Kmart had 1,400 stores.
