Police are investigating a shooting that took place in front of Planet Fitness in Portland on Wednesday morning. The gunshot victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police said the suspect, who fled the scene, was identified and later found dead in Kentucky. Police believe that he took his own life there. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.

State and local authorities are investigating how a convicted felon ended up with a Tennessee Department of Correction (DOC) badge and stolen handgun. On Sunday Ashland City Police stopped a vehicle driven by Seth Ryan Hall. Police say when they ran the 31-year-old’s license plate, there was no record of it with the state and the officers say Hall admitted his license was suspended. After getting consent to search Hall’s car, police said they found methamphetamine, a drug pipe, a .22 caliber handgun reported stolen out of Nashville, and a DOC badge. Hall was ultimately booked into the Cheatham County Jail on several charges.

At its most recent meeting, the city of Mt. Juliet unanimously passed a resolution confirming the city’s incorporation name. The effort, brought by Commissioner Ray Justice, now ensures “historical accuracy and consistency in official documents and communications” by and for the city. According to the resolution, Mt. Juliet was incorporated in 1972 with a population of about 1,500. At that time, a petition was submitted to the Wilson County Election Commission, and the state noted the city name as Mt. Juliet. That’s Mt. Juliet, not Mount Juliet.

From 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024, the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint and saturation patrol on Highway 12 South in Cheatham County. The focus of this event is to detect and deter impaired drivers, however, as non-compliance with the safety belt and child restraint laws and distracted driving place people in danger, these laws will also be vigorously enforced.
