An environmental group has claimed that an Ashland City highway property is being used to dump construction debris. Tennessee Riverkeeper has filed a lawsuit over a spot they’ve named “Dirt Mountain.” They claimed that runoff from the property is leading to pollution in the Cumberland River. The suit names two property owners operating under the name “RR Farms.” The front of the property displayed compliance documents showing its right to operate. Tennessee Riverkeeper said that it is suing to have the site designated as a landfill, which would impose stricter regulations on how the property deals with waste.
Fourth of July fireworks are fast approaching, and while local municipalities dictate whether consumer fireworks are allowed within city limits and when the state of Tennessee has passed other laws regulating fireworks to ensure safety. According to the TN Fire Marshal’s Office, 135 fires from fireworks in 2023 caused close to $1 million in direct damages to properties and homes. Insurance won’t always pay for the repairs. Drones and other unmanned aircraft were banned from being flown in TN above an outdoor event with more than 100 people or in the vicinity of a fireworks display without the event operator’s permission.
More than 14,000 letters have been sent to some Tennesseans to ensure they are United States citizens before they can vote in the next election. State officials said this is about election integrity, but some don’t see it that way. In a statement on behalf of Tennessee Coordinator of Elections Mark Goins and the Secretary of State’s Communications Director Doug Kufner, it read in part, “Accurate voter rolls are a vital component to ensuring election integrity, and Tennessee law makes it clear that only eligible voters are allowed to participate in Tennessee elections.”.
Tennessee State Parks are providing new all-terrain wheelchairs at state parks. The latest additions announced this week will bring the total number of chairs to 22. The chairs are designed to navigate a wide range of terrains and allow visitors to access recreation that they would’ve been unable to access prior. The chairs are free and are available for kids and adults. You are allowed to request a wheelchair upon arrival to the park, but it’s advised to give advance notice to the park you’re visiting so that you can ensure there’s one available for use.
