Sumner County could receive funding under Gov. Bill Lee’s 2024-25 fiscal budget to hire a new trial judge, which is a position needed to help relieve the backlog of cases awaiting trial. Criminal Court Judge Dee David Gay, the sole criminal court judge in Sumner County, has been forced to schedule trials into the beginning of 2025 because of the backlog, leaving witnesses’ memories to fade and victims waiting for justice. The governor’s proposed budget still has to be passed by the General Assembly, along with a bill that would create the new judge’s position. Then, the position would be created by this September. The judge would initially be appointed by Lee before being put on the general election ballot for Sumner County residents to decide in a vote.

Former President Donald Trump spoke in Nashville Thursday night to the National Religious Broadcasters Association as part of the NRB Presidential Forum and 2024 International Christian Media Convention. He was expected to speak around 8 p.m., but took the stage around 9:30 p.m., citing flight issues related to weather. The 45th President tried appealing to the largely faith-based crowd in the wide-ranging speech, which included attacking President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy. He also pledged to secure the southern border.

AT&T’s network went down for many of its customers in Middle Tennessee and across the United States Thursday morning, leaving customers unable to place calls, text, or access the internet. By a little after 3 pm CT, roughly 11 hours after reports of the outage first emerged, the company said that it had restored service to all impacted customers. Meanwhile, The Federal Communications Commission, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI are investigating widespread outages but were told that AT&T has no reason to think that this was a cybersecurity incident
