Millersville residents eagerly awaited Tuesday’s City Commission Meeting, following multiple shake-ups in leadership in a span of a few weeks. Last week, Fire Chief Brandon Head was the latest to be terminated. This follows the firing of the police chief, the acting city manager, and the city attorney. Following Head’s termination, more than a dozen city volunteer firefighters resigned. Millersville’s new city attorney said the firings come amid an ongoing investigation, including Head’s city-issued cellphone being factory cleared. In addition, city officials confirmed an investigation into so-called police commission cards allegedly issued to people without the proper credentials or proper training.

Sumner County Schools approved a plan to use temporary bleachers at three high school football stadiums next fall. The bleachers and temporary press boxes will be used at Beech, Hendersonville, and Portland high school stadiums. The bleachers are expected to be in place at Hendersonville in time for graduation in May. Parts of those stadiums were closed after structural inspections in August which came after the visitor stands collapsed at Beech. The school system and county commission approved using money in the school system’s reserve to build the new bleachers and other athletics projects before the start of the 2024 football season. However, delays in getting steel forced the system to delay construction until after football season.

Cell phone use by students during class could be prohibited in Tennessee public schools if a bill proposed by Rep. Rebecca Alexander becomes law. The bill would outlaw students from displaying, using, or accessing an electronic device during instructional time unless the electronic device is authorized, or provided to the student, by the LEA or public charter school for instructional purposes; it requires local boards of education and public charter school governing bodies to develop and adopt a policy to implement the prohibition. The measure is set to be discussed by the House K-12 Subcommittee.
