Only one thing can top 8 inches of snow and we may find out what it is today and tomorrow. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of Middle TN from noon Thursday until 9am Friday. It may start as some snow showers, but freezing rain is the biggest concern since that will lead to icy roads and hazardous travel. Ice accumulations could be anywhere from a glaze to a tenth of an inch. Snow totals could be up to 1″
All state employees went back to work Thursday. Offices closed after extreme winter weather covered roads in ice and snow, making travel treacherous. Travel conditions remain hazardous in some areas, resulting in delayed opening times. Any state employee who deems it unsafe to travel should contact their supervisor for guidance.
Meanwhile, Snowy and icy conditions have caused problems on the road over the past few days, from people being stranded to cars slipping and sliding into each other. Troopers encourage drivers to dress in warm clothing and ensure they have essentials in their vehicles like a blanket. snacks, water, and jumper cables in your vehicle just in case you get stuck.
The Tennessee Valley Authority shattered a new record on Wednesday for power demand across the state. The previous record was 33,482 megawatts in August 2007. Wednesday’s preliminary peak power demand was 34,526 megawatts at a system average temperature of 4 degrees. That sets an all-time TVA record.
14 Tennesseans across the state have died from weather-related incidents. One death has happened in Hickman, one in Madison, five in Shelby, two in Washington, one in Carroll, one in Knox, one in Van Buren, one in Lauderdale, and one in Henry Counties. The Hickman County death was of a 66-year-old man who was on the top of a business cleaning off snow when he fell through a skylight on Monday.
