As workers from the General Motors assembly plant in Spring Hill wrapped up the second day of their strike on Sunday, union leaders said United Auto Workers Local 1853 members are prepared to strike long term, if needed. UAW say they are fighting for equal pay, as opposed to a tier system; better wages; and pre-2009 benefits, like what employees had before GM declared bankruptcy. GM’s Spring Hill facility is the company’s largest manufacturing plant in North America, employing nearly 4,000 workers.
A 69-year-old Cannon County man drowned Saturday in the Caney Fork River in DeKalb County after his kayak overturned. Officials said the man and his wife left the Buffalo Valley Boat Ramp by kayak when the man’s kayak hit a tree and flipped. A Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the man’s body in eight feet of water, less than 100 yards from where his kayak overturned. The man was not wearing a lifejacket and his body was taken to the DeKalb County Hospital.
Three people were injured in a fiery crash involving five cars in Murfreesboro on Saturday night. at the intersection of Lascassas Pike and North Rutherford Boulevard/Northfield Boulevard. One vehicle caught fire in the crash. Murfreesboro Fire Rescue firefighters put out the fire and helped free the 24-year-old driver who was trapped in the car. That person was taken to the hospital by helicopter. Two others were injured in the crash. One was taken to Vanderbilt and is listed in stable condition. The other was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Fatal Accident Crash Team investigators are trying to find out if speeding may have contributed to the crash. Due to drought conditions in the region, the Franklin Mayor has declared an Emergency Status 1 Water Shortage in the City of Franklin Water Utility District. The city serves more than 19,000 customers in the Franklin area. These restrictions will be in effect and enforced until further notice. Emergency Status 1 was declared by Mayor Ken Moore based on trigger points established through the municipal code and the City of Franklin Drought Management Plan.
