Firefighters spent Saturday afternoon battling a large fire at an apartment complex in Mt. Juliet, which left one first responder critically injured and residents of more than 20 units displaced. The Mt. Juliet Police Department (MJPD) said building 400 at Glass Creek Apartments caught fire. Residents of the nearby 500 building were also evacuated as a precaution.  Due to the severity of the firefighter’s injuries, officials said he was put into a police car, taken to Summit ER, and later brought to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, where, as of Sunday, Aug. 13, he is in “critical, yet stable” condition.

Former Tennessee State Senator Brian Kelsey is convicted of illegally transferring campaign money during a failed campaign for US senate in 2016.  Kelsey pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the Federal Election Commission and to aiding and abetting the acceptance of excessive contributions on behalf of a federal campaign.  Kelsey led a conspiracy to transfer thousands of dollars from his state senate funds to his congressional campaign, which is illegal. He lost his license to practice law, lost his job, and will no longer be able to run for public office.  Kelsey’s lawyers asked for a probation sentence or a sentence of home confinement so he can continue caring for his three young children.  He’ll serve 21 months.

The White House Parks and Recreation department was recently recognized with a statewide award for their innovative approach to the parks and recreational facilities in the city.  In recognition of a concerted effort to offer new and exciting recreation opportunities and programming to their community, the Tennessee Municipal League presented White House officials last month with the award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation.

The Metro Public Health Department has reportedly detected West Nile virus in 75% of mosquito traps placed around Davidson County. Friday  the health department confirmed at least one positive case was detected in 30 out of 40 of its traps. However, there still have not been any human cases reported. According to officials, human infections are fairly rare. Metro officials say they haven’t had a positive human case since at least 2019 and health officials say that only one in five people who get West Nile virus develop symptoms.
