Thousands of Tennesseans will be hitting the road this weekend for the Memorial Day holiday. According to Triple-A, the state average for a gallon of gas last year was four-dollars-23-cents. This year, it’s expected to be three-dollars-12-cents. Triple-A also says more people are planning to travel longer distances than in years prior. The busiest day for road trips, however, is expected to be today.
Tennesseans are advised to stay safe on the water this weekend. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is urging boaters to keep safety in mind over Memorial Day weekend. Officials are reminding people to wear life jackets and take precautions like checking equipment and letting someone on dry land know where you are going before heading out.
You’re planning another this summer, the beach might not be a bad idea. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting a “near-normal” 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. The official government forecast calls for 12 to 17 named storms, with five to nine hurricanes and one to four major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. Hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.
Governor Lee is deploying 100 Tennessee National Guard troops to the southern border. He authorized the move with his office saying in a statement that it comes during an “ongoing national security crisis.” It also mentioned the “surging drug crisis being fueled by an open border.” The Tennessee troops will remain there through the end of the month
A man in Rutherford County died after being attacked by a bull. The Sheriff’s Office says 55-year-old Joseph Young of Chapel Hill was in a barn Wednesday when the animal reportedly came after him. Young was taken to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries. The bull also charged at deputies and the animal was shot and killed. An autopsy will be performed to determine Young’s cause of death.
