Governor Bill Lee was sworn in to his second term over the weekend. Lee took the oath of office during an inauguration ceremony on Saturday at the Legislative Plaza in Nashville. Lee tweeted, “It’s my highest honor to serve the people of Tennessee as their Governor. May the Lord pour His continued favor upon, and richly bless the great state of Tennessee.” The Republican won re-election in November, defeating Democrat Jason Martin.
Mount Juliet police are cracking down on traffic and safety rules at two area middle schools. Administrators with Mount Juliet and West Wilson middle schools met with police leaders last week to request help in fixing some dangerous driving and pedestrian activity during daily dismissal. They say they have seen students crossing busy roads outside of crosswalks to get to vehicles that are not following the pickup plans. Extra officers will outside those buildings beginning this afternoon to make sure students and caretakers are following the school’s safety guidelines.
Home improvement retailer Lowe’s is offering a unique option for children’s birthday parties. A small handful of their stores, including the one on Mallory Lane in Franklin, are launching the new Build A Birthday experience. Kids five and up can invite guests to the store for pizza from Domino’s and the chance to make something on their own. They will be provided with goggles, aprons, and tools to put together kits that include a bird house, a castle, a race car, and more.
A state audit finds $60,000 worth of fuel purchases were stolen from Cheatham County Schools. Although the district was able to get some of the money back by filing a fraud claim, the district lost about $29,000. The school district said its bus drivers use credit cards to purchase gas, but two cards were ‘skimmed’ when used at a business in the county and this led to fraudulent activity on the cards. Cheatham County said no employee made those charges.
