One person is dead after being hit by a car in Clarksville. Police say 21-year-old Jer Rion Thurmond of Clarksville was walking on Outlaw Field Road around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and was hit. Thurmond was treated at the hospital for injuries and later died. The investigation continues.
Tennessee’s Department of Corrections has a new leader. Governor Bill Lee yesterday announced Frank Strada will be the new commissioner of the department. He is expected to start in the new role on Monday and will take over from interim commissioner Lisa Helton who took over the position at the end of 2021. Strada has 34 years of corrections management and law enforcement experience and previously served in the Air Force.
Emergency medical experts are pointing to the frightening collapse of Damar Hamlin as a reminder of the importance of CPR training. The 24-year-old Buffalo Bills safety suffered a cardiac arrest while playing against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. Officials say Hamlin’s heartbeat was restored on the field before he was rushed to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The American Heart Association says more than three-hundred-50-thousand people per year go into sudden cardiac arrest, with CPR procedures likely to double or even triple their chances of survival.
The State of Tennessee is making funding available to help those suffering from mental health and addiction challenges find housing. The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services is preparing to distribute 15-million dollars in grants to nonprofits that provide residential services. Proposals for the grant funding are being accepted through the end of the month.
