Coronavirus cases are rising in Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Health reported the new cases yesterday, bringing the total since the outbreak began to over one-million-398-thousand. Close to 40 additional COVID-19-related deaths were also reported, with the total number standing at nearly 21-thousand. There are nearly 14-hundred COVID-19 hospitalizations in Tennessee.
new report says Tennessee is among the worst places to retire. MoneyWise used rankings by three other financial sites to create a score of zero-to-150 for each state with the higher the score, the worse it is to retire there. Tennessee is ranked the 23rd worst place to retire with a score of 80. The state received low marks for its high assault rate per capita and for a less-than-ideal climate for retirees.
A Middle Tennessee animal shelter is closed due to an outbreak of COVID-19 among employees. Montgomery County’s Animal Care and Control will be closed through Saturday, January 1st. County officials say the shelter was already in need of additional staff and the outbreak has left it especially shorthanded. The shelter is expected to reopen on Monday.
Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee is expecting a surge of donations ahead of the end of the year. Charities typically see an increase in donations at this time each year as taxpayers try to get their final deductions. Goodwill says between December 26th to the 31st it typically sees a 50-percent increase in donations. The organization says it’s shifting employees to its busiest sites to deal with the surge.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is announcing its safety enforcement plan for the New Year’s Eve holiday period. THP says starting Friday evening State Troopers will go on traffic patrol, including doing seat belts, driver’s licenses, and sobriety checks. The plan will end on Sunday, January 2nd at midnight. THP says nine people were killed in eight traffic crashes during the holiday last year and over 100 people were arrested for drunk driving.
