The City of Springfield has approved a new ward map based on 2020 census data. While there were no significant changes, the ward with the highest growth was Ward 2, with a 25% change. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen only expects more growth in this ward and others to come in the next several years. If that growth continues it could impact the drawing of future ward maps. As the population density of a particular ward increase, the size of that ward will shrink geographically make representation equal across the city.
The Robertson County Historical Society is trying something new this year with their always popular Christmas Tour of Homes event. Organizers say many businesses in historic downtown Springfield have had a challenging year so the Christmas Tour will focus on on the businesses downtown and showcase the building’s history. The annual event is set for Sundaay, December 12th.
There are over 24-hundred new coronavirus cases in Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Health reported the new cases yesterday, bringing the total since the outbreak began to over one-million-321-thousand. An additional 100 COVID-19-related deaths were also reported, with the total number standing at nearly 17-thousand-300. There are about 850 COVID-19 hospitalizations in Tennessee.
Over a dozen Tennesseans are being granted executive clemency by Governor Bill Lee. Governor Lee granted 13 pardons, meaning those people have been forgiven of their crime and commuted the sentences of three others. Lee also exonerated a Mid-State man who spent 12 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. The clemency was granted by Lee yesterday with guidance from the Tennessee Board of Parole.
Recreational marijuana could soon be legal in Clarksville. The City Council will consider a resolution tonight to decriminalize the possession and casual exchange of weed. It cites data from the ACLU that found Tennessee to have some of the highest amounts of marijuana arrests in the nation. The City Council also plans to ask the state General Assembly to consider similar legislation.
